Nine people were killed Sunday when a private business jet plunged into a South Florida neighborhood and exploded into a massive fireball near a busy roadway in Palm Beach County.
The Learjet 60 crashed in Greenacres, approximately seven miles southwest of West Palm Beach, at about 12:50 p.m. on November 1, according to officials. The aircraft was traveling from Austin, Texas, to the Bahamas when it went down.
The crash created a large crater in the pavement and sent thick black smoke into the air. Video recorded by motorists showed the aircraft descending rapidly before striking the ground and bursting into flames.
Authorities said there were no immediate reports of injuries or fatalities among people on the ground.
Pilots Reported Ice and Turbulence Before the Crash
According to air traffic control recordings, the pilots reported icing and turbulence while flying at approximately 35,000 feet.
The crew requested permission to climb another 2,000 feet after encountering precipitation. Shortly afterward, the aircraft began a rapid descent.
Recordings indicate that the pilots declared an emergency and issued Mayday calls as the situation deteriorated. The aircraft’s descent rate reportedly increased dramatically, with the crew eventually warning that the plane was heading toward the ground.
Investigators have not determined why the aircraft lost control. Weather conditions, including icing and turbulence, are among the factors that may be examined as part of the investigation.
Federal Authorities Investigate the Accident
U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed the deaths and described the crash as a tragedy. He said the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) would support the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) in investigating what happened.
The NTSB is responsible for determining the circumstances and probable cause of the accident. Investigators are expected to examine the aircraft, available flight data, weather conditions and communications between the pilots and air traffic controllers.
Federal investigators have also indicated that parts of the aircraft may have begun separating before impact. The precise sequence of events remains under investigation, and officials have cautioned against drawing conclusions before the evidence has been analyzed.
Crash Site Near Homes and Passing Traffic
The aircraft came down near a residential area in Greenacres, close to Military Trail and 10th Avenue North.
The impact and resulting fire occurred close to homes and passing vehicles, prompting an emergency response from local authorities and firefighters. Images from the scene showed extensive debris, damaged pavement and flames surrounding the crash site.
Palm Beach County authorities closed nearby roads and urged motorists to avoid the area while emergency crews worked at the scene.
Officials also began evacuating approximately 600 people from a nearby mobile-home community as a precaution while the investigation and response continued.
Community Faces Disruption After Fatal Crash
The accident caused significant disruption in the surrounding neighborhood, with road closures and evacuations affecting local residents.
Authorities have not publicly identified all nine people who died aboard the aircraft. Officials are continuing their investigation to establish the circumstances leading to the crash and determine what factors contributed to the loss of the jet.
The NTSB is expected to release additional information as investigators analyze the evidence. A final determination of the cause may take time.
The tragedy has renewed attention to the dangers aviation crews can face when severe weather, icing and turbulence affect aircraft in flight. However, investigators must complete their analysis before any factor can be identified as the cause of this accident.
