HIT THE ROAD, JACK!

V’Yaakov Halach L’Darko — Now the Real Work Begins

The shofar has been put away. The machzorim are back on the shelf. The sukkah is coming down, the lulav and etrog have done their job, and after the dancing of Simchat Torah, our feet may still be a little sore.

Tishrei is over.

So… now what?

There is a well-known Chassidic expression for this moment of the year:

“V’Yaakov halach l’darko” — “And Yaakov went on his way.”

Or, in slightly more modern language: Hit the road, Jack!

We’ve spent an entire month filling the tank. Now it’s time to hit the road.

During Elul and Tishrei, we live in a different world. We hear the shofar. We crown Hashem as King on Rosh Hashanah. We stand like angels on Yom Kippur. We sit surrounded by the holiness of the sukkah. We shake the Four Kinds. We dance with the Torah.

It’s spiritual fuel, enough to power us for an entire year.

But fuel isn’t meant to stay at the gas station.

Eventually, you have to drive.

That is V’Yaakov halach l’darko.

After all the inspiration of the holidays, Hashem says: Now take it with you. Take Rosh Hashanah into the office. Take Yom Kippur into the way you speak to your spouse and children. Take the joy of Sukkot into a stressful Tuesday afternoon. Take Simchat Torah into the way you learn Torah on an ordinary Wednesday night.

Because Judaism isn’t meant only for the synagogue or the holidays.

It is meant for real life.

The real test of Tishrei isn’t how inspired we felt during Neilah or how enthusiastically we danced on Simchat Torah. The real test is what happens afterward.

Are we a little more patient?

Do we make more time for Torah?

Do we put on tefillin more consistently?

Do we light Shabbat candles?

Do we give more tzedakah?

Do we make our homes a little more Jewish and our everyday interactions a little more G-dly?

Perhaps that is why the expression specifically speaks about Yaakov going on his way. Yaakov represents the Jew who enters the world—the world of work, family, bills, traffic, pressures and responsibilities—and brings Hashem along for the ride.

The holiness doesn’t end when Tishrei ends.

In a sense, this is when it begins.

Tishrei gave us the fuel. Now comes the open road of Cheshvan and the ordinary months ahead. There may not be a major Yom Tov every few days to inspire us. That is precisely the point.

Now we get to discover whether the Yom Tov became part of us.

So as we pack away the sukkah and return to our regular schedules, let’s each choose one piece of Tishrei to take along for the ride. One mitzvah. One commitment. One small change that turns inspiration into action.

The tank is full.

The road ahead is waiting.

V’Yaakov halach l’darko.

Hit the road, Jack. And take Tishrei with you.
