Florida Rabbi Mobilizes Jewish Community to Block Anti‑Israel Candidate in Democratic Primary

Boca Raton — In a rare political move, Rabbi Efrem Goldberg, senior rabbi of the influential Boca Raton Synagogue, has called on his congregation to temporarily register as Democrats in order to participate in the upcoming Florida Democratic primary elections.

The rabbi explained that the effort is designed to support Congressman Jared Moskowitz, a pro‑Israel Democrat, against challenger Oliver Larkin, who has been endorsed by the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). Larkin has accused Israel of “committing genocide,” demanded an end to U.S. military aid, and expressed support for the Palestinian “right of return.” He has also appeared alongside figures accused of antisemitism.

Rabbi Goldberg, who generally leans Republican, stressed that this initiative is not about party loyalty but about blocking a candidate hostile to Israel from gaining traction. He clarified that in the general election, individuals should vote according to their conscience, but in the primary, pro‑Israel voices must unite to prevent Larkin’s nomination.

The district at stake, recently redrawn to favor Republicans, is considered a swing seat in the November midterms and contains one of the largest Jewish populations of any U.S. congressional district. Goldberg noted that his congregation of more than 1,000 families has responded positively, recognizing the urgency of the situation.

Still, some members expressed hesitation:

  • Strategic voters want to remain registered Republicans to influence the gubernatorial primary, where a candidate with openly antisemitic views is running.
  • Others feel emotionally uncomfortable registering as Democrats, even temporarily.

Goldberg acknowledged these concerns but emphasized that failing to act could allow an anti‑Israel candidate to represent a district central to Jewish life in Florida.
