Former Miami Superintendent Alberto Carvalho resigned from LAUSD following an active FBI investigation

Los Angeles — The Los Angeles Unified School District confirmed Sunday that Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho submitted his resignation, effective June 21, 2026. The decision comes months after Carvalho was placed on administrative leave following FBI raids in February at his office near LAUSD headquarters, his San Pedro home, and a property in Miami.

The FBI has not disclosed the purpose of the raids, but court records show federal prosecutors are pursuing a fraud case against AllHere, an education technology company that received a $6 million LAUSD contract to provide an AI-powered chatbot called “Ed.” The company collapsed, and its founder, Joanna Smith-Griffin, was charged with securities fraud, wire fraud, and identity theft. Carvalho is not named in that case and has not been charged with any crime.

Despite denying wrongdoing, Carvalho’s resignation marks the end of a turbulent period for LAUSD. In March, he released a statement through his attorneys asserting that he had always acted “in the best interests of students” and respected the investigative process.

The LAUSD Board of Education acknowledged his resignation and emphasized its commitment to stability and progress. Andrés Chait, a longtime educator, will continue as acting superintendent until a permanent replacement is chosen.

Key Points

  • Resignation date: June 21, 2026.
  • Reason: Months after FBI raids at Carvalho’s home and office.
  • Investigation: Linked to AllHere’s failed $6M AI chatbot contract; founder charged, Carvalho not implicated.
  • Board response: Focus on stability and continuity.
  • Interim leadership: Andrés Chait remains acting superintendent.
