Tallahassee, FL — Several students from a Florida university have filed a legal petition asking a state court to halt disciplinary actions stemming from their alleged participation in a racist and antisemitic group chat.
The lawsuit argues that the university’s decision to suspend the students violates their constitutional rights to free speech and due process, claiming that the messages were shared privately and not intended for public dissemination.
University officials, however, maintain that the content of the chat — which reportedly included hate speech and antisemitic slurs — breached the institution’s code of conduct and created a hostile environment for other students.
The case has drawn national attention, reigniting debate over the limits of free expression on campus and the responsibility of universities to protect students from harassment and discrimination.
Jewish advocacy groups have condemned the chat’s content, calling it “deeply disturbing” and urging the court to uphold the university’s disciplinary measures. Civil liberties organizations, meanwhile, have expressed concern about potential overreach in punishing private speech.
The court’s decision is expected to set an important precedent for how Florida universities handle similar incidents involving hate speech and student discipline in the digital age.
