Florida School District Criticized for Mishandling Antisemitic Incidents

Bay District Schools in Florida, which oversees nearly 50 schools and serves about 30,000 students, is facing scrutiny for its response to antisemitic presentations at one of its high schools. The Anti-Defamation League (ADL), together with the law firm Akerman, filed a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education, arguing that the district failed to meet its obligations under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

The complaint centers on two classroom presentations at A. Crawford Mosley High School in Lynn Haven during August and September 2025. In the first case, a student delivered a project filled with antisemitic stereotypes, portraying Jews as “greedy, manipulative, and powerful.” The teacher did not intervene, despite objections from classmates. She later promised to review future projects before they were presented.

However, a month later, another group of students gave a presentation that included wearing kippahs, performing Nazi salutes, and repeating conspiracy theories about Jewish control and loyalty to Israel. A substitute teacher allowed the presentation to continue and even laughed, while the regular teacher later permitted the group to repeat it.

The student targeted by these incidents, along with his mother, reported the matter to the district. Administrators acknowledged the presentations were inappropriate and said disciplinary action would be taken, along with additional training for the teacher. Yet, according to the ADL, the district’s response fell short: no public statement was issued, no antisemitism training was offered, and the broader school community was left uninformed. Ultimately, the student transferred to another district outside Florida due to safety concerns and prior experiences of hostility.

James Pasch, ADL’s Vice President of Litigation, emphasized: “No child should endure sustained harassment based on their religious identity in a public school, and no parent should have to plead for their child to be accepted simply for being Jewish.”
