BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) — The man Haitian police say orchestrated the assassination of the country’s president has deep Florida ties, including a home in Boynton Beach.
According to records, Christian Sanon has lived all over South Florida for about 20 years.
Haitian police say right after the president was killed, the men who did it called Sanon.
Sanon has long been a critic of his native country’s leadership.
A decade ago, he posted three videos on YouTube with titles like “Leadership in Haiti” and “Corruption in Politics.”
“Where is the leadership of Haiti? They are nowhere to be found. You want to know why? They are corrupt,” he said in one of the videos.
It’s a campaign style video, where he fashions himself as a better alternative.
“With me in power, you’re going to have to tell me, what are you doing with our uranium? What are you doing with our oil? What are you doing with our gold?” he said in the same video.
However, public records paint a different picture of Sanon.
He goes by Dr. Christian Sanon, but has no license to practice medicine in Florida.
Two years after posting these videos, he filed for bankruptcy.
He has a real estate business registered in Boynton Beach and a therapy business registered in West Palm Beach.
After President Jovenel Moïse was shot and killed at his home, Haitian police say the attackers called Sanon.
They wrote on Facebook that the 63-year-old recently flew to Haiti on a private jet, with the goal to become the president.
They say they searched Sanon’s home and found evidence he orchestrated the assassination.
The Haitian First Lady was also injured in the attack and is in Miami getting treatment.
