Broward Commuter Rail Project Advances with $164 Million in Federal Funding

Florida’s Broward County Commuter Rail South project has reached a major milestone, advancing to the engineering phase of the Federal Transit Administration’s (FTA) Capital Investment Grants program. The project is expected to improve transportation connections between Miami-Dade County and Fort Lauderdale.

On October 23, 2026, the U.S. Department of Transportation announced an anticipated federal investment of approximately $164 million to support the project. The funding would help cover engineering work, property acquisition, utility relocation, demolition and other preparatory activities before construction.

New Rail Connection Between Miami-Dade and Broward

The proposed expansion would extend commuter rail service approximately 10.5 miles along the existing Florida East Coast Railway corridor, connecting Aventura in Miami-Dade County with areas south of downtown Fort Lauderdale.

The planned route would serve communities and destinations in northeastern Miami-Dade County, Hallandale Beach, Hollywood and the Dania Beach and airport district.

The project includes three proposed stations and the acquisition of new rail vehicles. Once operational, the service is expected to offer commuters an additional transportation option between the two counties.

Federal Officials Highlight Regional Benefits

U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy said advancing the project would bring Florida closer to establishing another transportation option for residents and commuters.

Federal Transit Administration Acting Deputy Administrator Matthew Cahill also highlighted the potential benefits, saying the rail connection could improve access to essential services, including healthcare, education and employment centers.

The proposed service is intended to provide an alternative to driving for some South Florida residents, potentially making regional travel more convenient.

Funding and Project Requirements

Although the federal government has announced an anticipated commitment of approximately $164 million, the investment remains subject to the completion of financial, technical and legal requirements, as well as congressional appropriations.

The engineering phase allows Broward County Transit to advance preliminary project activities. It does not mean the entire rail line is already funded, under construction or ready to open.

Further progress will depend on completing the required approvals and securing the funding needed to move the project toward construction and eventual service.

A Step Toward Improved South Florida Mobility

The Broward Commuter Rail South project is part of broader efforts to improve transportation options across South Florida, where residents frequently travel between communities for work, education, healthcare and other daily needs.

If completed, the extension would add a new commuter rail connection between Miami-Dade and Broward counties, expanding the region’s public transportation network.

For residents, the project’s eventual impact will depend on its final design, station locations, service frequency and timeline for implementation.
