Miami Beach — The Jewish Museum of Florida (JMOF) has officially regained its status as an independent institution, marking a new chapter in its history after more than a decade under the administration of Florida International University (FIU).
Originally founded in 1995, the museum occupies two restored historic synagogues on Washington Avenue in South Beach. It has long served as a cultural and educational hub dedicated to preserving and celebrating the Jewish experience in Florida, from early settlers to contemporary communities.
Under FIU’s management, JMOF expanded its academic collaborations and exhibitions, but museum leaders expressed a desire to return to community‑based governance to strengthen local engagement and fundraising. The transition restores full autonomy to the museum’s board, allowing it to chart its own vision for programming, partnerships, and preservation efforts.
The museum’s leadership emphasized that independence will enable more flexible curation, including exhibitions highlighting Florida’s Jewish pioneers, Holocaust survivors, and modern Jewish artists. Plans are underway for new educational initiatives and traveling exhibits to reach broader audiences across the state.
Community members and donors have welcomed the move, viewing it as a reaffirmation of the museum’s original mission — to serve as a living archive of Jewish life in Florida and a bridge between generations.
