Miami — Health officials have announced a recall of frozen blueberries sold at Publix supermarkets in Florida and Georgia after testing revealed possible E. coli contamination. The recall affects specific lots of 16‑ounce bags of frozen blueberries distributed under the Publix brand.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) confirmed that routine sampling detected the bacteria, which can cause severe gastrointestinal illness. Symptoms of E. coli infection include stomach cramps, diarrhea, and in rare cases, kidney complications.
Publix has urged customers to check their freezers and return affected products to stores for a full refund. The company emphasized that no illnesses have been reported so far, but the recall is being conducted out of an abundance of caution.
The FDA advises consumers to discard or return the recalled blueberries immediately and to sanitize any surfaces or containers that may have come into contact with the product.
This recall comes amid heightened scrutiny of food safety standards, as federal agencies continue to monitor produce imports and domestic packaging facilities for contamination risks.
