Dangerous Heat Advisory Issued for South Florida as Sahara Dust Arrives

Miami — The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for Miami‑Dade and Broward counties, warning that “feels‑like” temperatures could soar to 106°F–108°F this week. Officials cautioned residents to limit outdoor activity during peak hours and to stay hydrated as the region faces one of the hottest stretches of the summer.

Adding to the extreme conditions, a Saharan dust plume is drifting into South Florida skies. Meteorologists say the dust will reduce visibility, worsen air quality, and may trigger respiratory issues for those with asthma or allergies. While the dust can temporarily suppress tropical storm formation, it intensifies the heat and creates vivid sunsets across the region.

Local authorities have opened cooling centers at libraries and community facilities to help vulnerable residents, including seniors and children. Health officials stressed that pets should not be left outside or inside vehicles, as heatstroke risks are severe.

The advisory is expected to remain in effect through the weekend, with scattered thunderstorms offering little relief. Experts warn that July’s combination of extreme heat and Saharan dust underscores the challenges South Florida faces during peak hurricane season.
