A newly unveiled golden statue of Donald Trump at Trump National Doral in Miami has reignited national debate over political symbolism, public art, and activism in America. The 22-foot sculpture — dubbed the “Don Colossus” — was reportedly funded by crypto investors and dedicated during a ceremony led by evangelical pastor Mark Burns.
While the statue itself was not organized by Jewish activists, Jewish advocacy groups and Jewish-led political organizations have become increasingly visible in the broader cultural and political debates surrounding Trump-era symbolism, monuments, and public demonstrations.
The Doral statue depicts Trump raising his fist, referencing the 2024 assassination attempt he survived. Supporters describe the monument as a symbol of patriotism and resilience, while critics have condemned it as excessive political idolization.
From a Jewish religious perspective, statues and graven images have long carried serious spiritual concerns connected to idolatry. The Torah explicitly warns against the worship of carved figures and human images, making many observant Jews deeply uncomfortable with the elevation of political leaders into larger-than-life symbols. While Judaism does not ban all forms of art or sculpture, turning political figures into monumental icons can conflict with traditional Jewish sensitivities regarding personality worship and idolatrous imagery.
Many Jewish commentators argue that no political leader — including Donald Trump — should be elevated in a manner that resembles reverence or devotion. Supporters may view the statue as symbolic patriotism, but critics within the Jewish community say Trump should certainly not be depicted in ways that blur the line between political support and glorification.
Jewish activists and organizations have played major roles in national conversations about democracy, antisemitism, civil rights, and political extremism throughout the Trump era. Jewish-led groups have organized demonstrations at Trump Tower and other Trump-affiliated properties over concerns related to antisemitism, immigration policy, and threats to democratic institutions.
At the same time, Jewish figures have remained influential inside Trump’s political orbit. Trump’s family connections through Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump, along with Jewish advisers and donors, have played significant roles in shaping aspects of his political coalition and Middle East policy.
Public art connected to Trump has repeatedly become a battleground for activism from both supporters and opponents. Over the years, artists and activist collectives have installed numerous anti-Trump sculptures and satirical monuments across the United States. These included nude Trump statues placed in major cities during the 2016 campaign season, as well as later artistic installations criticizing his presidency and political legacy.
The newest golden Trump statue in Florida now joins that growing collection of politically charged monuments. For supporters, it represents strength and survival. For critics and activists, it symbolizes the growing personalization of American politics and the deep divisions that continue to shape the national political landscape.
