Sunny Isles Beach, FL – The first night of Hanukkah was celebrated with a remarkable candle lighting ceremony at City Hall, attended by over 500 community members, including children, adults, and elders. Organized by Rabbi Beren, and his wife Rebbetzin Tobi of Chabad Sunny Isles, the event brought together a diverse group in a spirit of unity and joy.
The Chazan of Ramban Synagogue, Roee Bruchim, opened the ceremony with special prayers, including a prayer for soldiers. His powerful voice resonated through the crowd, touching the hearts of all present. Rabbi Beren then welcomed everyone, explained the significance of Hanukkah, and invited Mayor Larisa Svechin to speak. Mayor Svechin expressed her gratitude and pride in the community’s strong turnout and spirit.
Deputy Consul General of Israel Ayellet Black was deeply moved by the impressive gathering. She noted the unity and warmth of the community, especially as they honored IDF Lieutenant Yaniv Galkovsky, who has shown incredible bravery and resilience.
Tzvia Wexler, Beit Halochem’s National Development Director, thanked the audience for their support of wounded soldiers. She spoke about Lieutenant Yaniv, highlighting his story as one of the modern-day miracles of Hanukkah. Wexler emphasized the significance of seeing Yaniv stand with the community, symbolizing hope and perseverance.
Rabbi Beren proudly introduced Lieutenant Yaniv Galkovsky to the stage, referring to him as a hero of the IDF. Yaniv, visibly moved, shared his harrowing yet inspiring journey. As a platoon leader in the “Kfir” Brigade, Yaniv faced unimaginable challenges during his service in Gaza. He recounted the day when a terrorist’s explosive device caused the loss of three soldiers and injured fourteen, including himself. Despite his injuries, Yaniv’s leadership saved lives, and his commitment to his comrades didn’t end there.
Through his recovery, Yaniv dedicated himself to supporting the families of the fallen and helping injured soldiers. He found solace and strength at Beit Halochem, where the supportive community and exceptional facilities played a crucial role in his rehabilitation.
“In my journey of rehabilitation—both my own and that of my fellow soldiers—we had to confront the harsh reality that we were not as physically capable as we once were. Even though we might appear fine and manage daily activities, returning to sports in regular gyms, surrounded by people who hadn’t endured what we had, was daunting,” Yaniv shared. “For months, the only place where I felt truly comfortable playing the sports I loved was Beit Halochem in Tel Aviv, near my home. The exceptional facilities and staff, and most importantly, the supportive and understanding community of the basketball team—comprising individuals who had faced similar struggles—played a crucial role in my rehabilitation. They helped me reclaim my life and rediscover my strength.”
Yaniv then lit the first candle of Hanukkah in honor of the thousands of wounded soldiers and in memory of his fallen comrades. The ceremony continued with music and festive food, creating a warm and joyous atmosphere.
This memorable evening at Sunny Isles Beach City Hall marked the beginning of Hanukkah with a powerful message of resilience, community, and hope. The community looks forward to continuing the celebration of Hanukkah, bringing light and unity to all.
