Man, 78, identified as boat operator in crash that killed 15-year-old girl: FWC report

KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. (CBS12) — The 78-year-old operator of the “vessel of interest” connected to the hit-and-run that killed a South Florida teenager was identified in the newly released FWC incident report.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) listed 78-year-old Carlos Guillermo Alonso, of Coral Gables, as the only person on the boat that fatally struck 15-year-old Ella Adler on May 11, according to the report.

Adler was wakeboarding in Biscayne Bay with another person when they both fell into the water, the incident form read. While in the water, the boat Alonso was allegedly operating struck Adler.

The incident report also noted the boat Adler was originally being towed from recovered her from the water. Unfortunately, the student from Ransom Everglades High School died from her injuries, the FWC reported.

The FWC, U.S. Coast Guard, and Miami Police Department were notified and responded to the scene to investigate.

On Tuesday, the FWC said investigators seized the “vessel of interest” following descriptions from witnesses. The FWC said the owner of the boat is cooperating with the investigation.
