Major Safety Concerns at Miami Public Schools

new report from Florida Auditor General Sherill Norman’s office cites numerous safety problems during the 2021-22 academic year in the Miami-Dade school district, including:

– Just 37% of the district’s 18,200-plus employees completed required mental health assistance training.

– An estimated 30% of safe-school officers could not prove they’d received proper training.

– Miami-Dade may have violated state law by not fully implementing a vital panic alert system.

– Many facility safety issues remained unresolved for two or more years, including missing smoke detectors, broken emergency windows and unsafe electrical installation.

District personnel said most of the deficiencies will be addressed this year.
