Coral Gables, FL – Over 400 people gathered at Ponce Circle Park on Sunday, December 29, to celebrate the fifth night of Hanukkah. The event, graced by Rabbi and Rebbetzin Stolik of Chabbad of Coral Gables, was a touching tribute to the festive spirit of the holiday.
The park buzzed with activities for children and families, including gift surprises, jumping, rock climbing, and distributing delicious Hanukkah donuts and potato latkes. The Coral Gables Fire Department delighted kids with an exciting show, distributing parachute toys and chocolate coins from a fire truck ladder high above the crowd.
Rabbi Stolik opened the celebration with a compelling story about Hanukkah’s significance, emphasizing the importance of community support and unity. Mayor Vince Lago followed with a heartfelt speech, praising the strong relationship with Israel and affirming his support for the Jewish community.
The highlight of the evening was the appearance of Yaniv Galkovsky, a 23-year-old officer in the IDF’s Kfir Brigade, who traveled from Israel to share his inspiring story. Yaniv recounted his experiences during a mission in Khan Yunis where a terrorist’s explosive device resulted in the tragic loss of three soldiers and injuries to fourteen others, including Yaniv. Despite sustaining shrapnel wounds in his legs and severe burns on his face and hands, Yaniv’s swift response and leadership saved lives. His journey through recovery at Beit Halochem was a powerful reminder of the resilience and courage of IDF soldiers and the importance of community support.
Yaniv thanked everyone for their continuous support of Beit Halochem and the IDF wounded soldiers. His words emphasized the community’s dedication to ensuring that no soldier is forgotten. Yaniv’s commitment to visiting the families of fallen soldiers and aiding injured comrades in their rehabilitation exemplifies the profound sense of duty and resilience that defines true leadership.
Beit Halochem is the only organization authorized to collaborate with the Israeli Ministry of Defense to rehabilitate wounded IDF soldiers, providing comprehensive physical and emotional support. This vital work helps soldiers regain their independence and rebuild their lives. The evening’s gathering strengthened the spirit of unity and solidarity that Beit Halochem embodies.
