After a period of uncertainty, a new framework for the Rebbe‘s Kolel is launching, with 40 yungeleit receiving a stipend ahead of Pesach.

A new framework has been established for the Rebbe’s Kolel in Crown Heights following a recent period of financial uncertainty, COLlive has learned.
The initiative is being advanced by Rabbi Shmaya Krinsky, Executive Director of Machne Israel, together with Rabbi Menachem Heller, who directs the kolel led by his father, Rabbi Yosef Heller, the Rosh Kolel.
Founded at the instruction of the Rebbe in 5722 (1962), Kolel Menachem, which operates under the Rebbe’s Mazkirus, was the first kollel in Lubavitch history. It began with a small group of yungeleit learning in the women’s section of the shul at 770 Eastern Parkway.
Over time, it developed into a central center of Torah study. Under the Rebbe’s direct guidance, kolel members were tasked with scholarly research and publishing projects, and their standards were closely overseen to ensure a high level of learning.
While the Rebbe strongly encouraged shlichus, he also expressed a desire for dedicated talmidei chachamim, stating that he had a “taavah” for yungeleit to be fully immersed in Torah study (Shabbos Parshas Eikev, 20 Menachem Av 5733).
According to details obtained by COLlive, the program is beginning with 40 yungeleit, a number set to allow for controlled growth and consistent funding. The first stipends are being distributed this week, shortly before Pesach.
A person involved in the effort said the new structure is designed to ensure stipends are paid on time and in full, following a period when funding was less predictable.
The initiative also introduces a model enabling donors to support individual kolel members directly, creating a more defined relationship between contributors and participants.
Plans are under consideration to expand the number of participants as additional funding becomes available. Currently, approximately 100 yungeleit are learning in the kolel, though not all on a full-time basis. Discussions are also ongoing on forming an advisory group that could include members of Anash and shluchim.
Separately, efforts are underway to address maintenance needs and improve the physical conditions of the kolel building on Union Street and Kingston Avenue, as part of a broader push to strengthen its long-term stability.
