Honoring Sgt. Yovel Moryosef (ז”ל): A Chabad Synagogue in His Memory

In the face of tragedy, a family’s love and a community’s resilience have inspired a project that will serve generations to come.

The Story of Sgt. Yovel Moryosef (ז”ל)

Sergeant Yovel Moryosef (ז”ל), a dedicated soldier of the Golani Brigade, was known for his kindness, selflessness, and unwavering sense of duty. His name, “Yovel,” carries deep meaning in Hebrew, symbolizing both “the whole world” and a period of renewal.

Yovel (ז”ל) was set to spend the weekend at home, but when he saw an opportunity to help his fellow soldiers, he did not hesitate. He volunteered to take on an extra night of guard duty, ensuring his friends could rest before their weekend shifts. Tragically, during his watch near Beit El, south of Jerusalem, a terrorist attack claimed the lives of Yovel (ז”ל), three other soldiers, and a civilian woman. The devastating news shook his family, friends, and the wider community.

Rabbi Aryeh Phrus, who knew Yovel (ז”ל) well, described him not only as a hero but as a beacon of kindness and humility. “He embodied ‘free love’—a pure, giving spirit that touched everyone he met,” said Rabbi Phrus.

A Synagogue Built on Love and Legacy

In the wake of unimaginable loss, Yovel’s (ז”ל) parents, Moti and Ilanit Moryosef, chose to honor his memory in the most meaningful way possible—by building a Chabad synagogue in Ashkelon. Their decision was rooted in Yovel’s (ז”ל) essence: a man of the people, always eager to help.

For years, the Chabad community in Ashkelon, under the leadership of Rabbi Aryeh Phrus, lacked a permanent home, holding services in temporary spaces like private homes and community centers. The time has come to establish a lasting place for worship, unity, and support. This synagogue will not only serve as a house of prayer but also as a center for youth programs, community events, and social initiatives—embodying Yovel’s (ז”ל) spirit of generosity and care.

A Father’s Resolve: Turning Pain Into Purpose

Moti Moryosef recalls two knocks on his door that changed his life. The first was from the military officer delivering the heartbreaking news of Yovel’s (ז”ל) death. The second, however, was a knock of transformation—a call to rebuild, to rise from sorrow, and to continue Yovel’s (ז”ל) legacy of giving.

In an extraordinary act of devotion, Moti has committed to funding the majority of the project himself. However, to complete the synagogue and secure its future, additional funds are needed.

How You Can Help

The initial fundraising goal is 200,000 Shekels, and the family is seeking generous donors to help make this dream a reality. There is also an opportunity for long-term supporters to contribute monthly, ensuring the synagogue remains a pillar of faith and community in a region frequently targeted by terrorist attacks.
