Florida Rep. Randy Fine, R-Palm Bay and a Jewish lawmaker, said Tuesday morning he feels “terrible” for the Jews he knows that are “lifelong Democrats.”
The statement comes as speculation swirls that Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro’s religion – Judaism – was taken into consideration when weighing the pros and cons of Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate pick as a portion of the Democratic base is pro-Palestine.
During the “veepstakes” media coverage, Shapiro faced coverage of his past pro-Israel sentiments, and faced some online backlash from further left-wing elements of Harris’ supporters.
“The abandonment has to be overwhelming,” Fine said. “I spent a week among 50,000 Republicans at the RNC wearing my kippah and never got so much as a dirty look from anyone. Rather, we couldn’t give away Jews Support Trump signs fast enough.”
“You are welcome here,” he said.
Fine added that the Democratic Party “has officially declared Jews are not welcome.”
“Today is the most dangerous day for Jews in America in almost 100 years,” Fine said. “If Donald Trump doesn’t win, Jews will not be safe in America. I get no joy from that statement.”
The day before the running mate selection, Fine speculated that tapping Shapiro would create a “Democrat civil war” between the pro-Palestine/Muslim wing of the party and the “American” wing.
“If she doesn’t, it proves the Democrat Party wishes to be Judenrein,” Fine said. “Any Jew who remains is an idiot.”
Trump has been campaigning on being pro-Israel and pro-Jewish, and has vocally wondered why those who back Israel would continue to vote for Democrats.
Shapiro, when being considered for vice president, was argued to potentially give Harris a better shot in the pivotal swing state of Pennsylvania, which he won by double digits in a GOP-friendly midterm.
